Oral Surgery Mississauga
Oral surgery includes a range of surgical procedures used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the teeth, gums, jaw, and other structures of the mouth. At Parkway Family Dentistry, oral surgery may be recommended when a dental condition cannot be adequately treated with routine dental procedures or when surgical treatment is needed to restore oral function and health.
Depending on your diagnosis and treatment needs, oral surgery may include procedures such as wisdom teeth removal, dental implant surgery, bone grafting, apicoectomy, oral pathology procedures, and selected procedures involving the jaw or supporting bone. Some cases may require referral to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or another specialist.
Oral Surgery Procedures
Oral surgery can address a variety of dental and oral health concerns. Your dentist will assess your condition and explain which treatment options are appropriate for your specific case.
- Wisdom teeth removal – Surgical removal of impacted, partially erupted, or problematic wisdom teeth when extraction is recommended.
- Dental implant surgery – Placement of dental implants to replace missing tooth roots as part of an implant restoration.
- Bone grafting – Addition of bone-grafting material when additional bone support may be needed for certain dental implant procedures or other treatments.
- Apicoectomy – A surgical procedure involving removal of the tip of a tooth root, sometimes considered when infection persists around the root after previous root canal treatment.
- Oral pathology procedures – Evaluation and, when indicated, removal or biopsy of abnormal tissue in the mouth.
- Osseous surgery – A periodontal surgical procedure used in selected cases of advanced gum disease to access and treat areas affected by periodontal infection and bone changes.
- Jaw and facial procedures – Certain corrective or trauma-related procedures may require assessment by an appropriate oral and maxillofacial specialist.
When Might Oral Surgery Be Recommended?
Your dentist may recommend oral surgery when a tooth is impacted or cannot be removed with a routine extraction, when bone or gum tissue requires surgical treatment, when a missing tooth is being replaced with a dental implant, or when a persistent dental condition requires a surgical approach.
Not every oral health problem requires surgery. Depending on your diagnosis, alternatives such as restorative treatment, periodontal therapy, root canal treatment, or routine tooth extraction may be appropriate. Your dentist will discuss the benefits, limitations, risks, and expected recovery associated with the recommended procedure.
What to Expect Before Oral Surgery
The first step is a consultation and examination. Parkway Family Dentistry will review your symptoms, dental and medical history, medications, and previous treatments. Dental X-rays or other imaging may be recommended to evaluate the teeth, roots, nerves, jawbone, or surrounding structures before treatment.
If surgery is appropriate, your dentist will explain the procedure, anesthesia or sedation options when available, preparation instructions, expected recovery, and any follow-up care you may need. More complex cases may be referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or another dental specialist.
