The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): What You Need to Know
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps make dental care more affordable for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance or coverage.
You may qualify if your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000, you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes, and you and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, have filed the required Canadian tax returns. Other eligibility requirements also apply.
If you or someone you love might be eligible, here’s what to know before your next dental visit at Parkway Family Dentistry in Mississauga.
Is Dental Care Free Under the CDCP?
Not always. The CDCP helps cover eligible dental services, but it may not pay the full amount charged by a dental provider. The amount you pay depends on your adjusted family net income, the CDCP-established fee for the service, and whether the provider’s fee is higher than the CDCP-established fee.
What Treatments May Be Covered?
The CDCP may cover a range of diagnostic, preventive, basic, major, oral-surgery, and sedation services when they meet the plan’s requirements. Examples include:
- Dental examinations, X-rays, and scaling
- Fillings and root canal treatments
- Tooth extractions and dentures
Some services require preauthorization before treatment begins. Since November 1, 2024, providers have been able to submit preauthorization requests for certain services, including some crowns, partial dentures, complex treatments, and services beyond established frequency limits. Not every request is approved, and a service requiring preauthorization may not be covered unless approval is received first.
When Can You Apply?
Applications for the 2026–2027 benefit period are open. Eligible Canadians can apply through the official Government of Canada CDCP process. If you previously had CDCP coverage, you may need to renew or re-apply to avoid a gap in coverage.
